Choosing the grade
Vulcanised fibre is tough, takes a screw load without cracking and insulates well, which is why it is the usual choice for washers in electrical assemblies.
It is made from cellulose, so it absorbs some moisture. For parts that sit in water all the time, ask us about rubber or PTFE instead.
Red and grey grades behave alike; most buyers choose by colour code or by what the drawing specifies.
Questions
Is vulcanised fibre better than bakelite for washers?
For washers that are tightened by a screw, usually yes. Bakelite is rigid and can split when the screw is driven hard; vulcanised fibre is tougher and gives slightly under load. Bakelite is chosen where rigidity and heat resistance matter more.
