Choosing the grade
Choose rubber by the fluid it touches and the environment it sees, not by how it looks.
Oil or fuel: nitrile (NBR). Water, steam and outdoor weather with no oil: EPDM, which swells in mineral oil. A bit of both: neoprene is usually the sensible middle.
Nitrile is attacked by ozone and sunlight; outdoors it develops fine surface cracks over time.
High temperature: silicone (not for oil) or Viton (FKM) for heat plus oil and fuel.
Questions
Which rubber should I use for a washer in engine oil?
Nitrile (NBR). EPDM swells in mineral oil and should not be used there, even though it looks identical.
Why do nitrile washers crack outdoors?
Nitrile is attacked by ozone and sunlight. For outdoor parts with no oil contact, EPDM or neoprene is usually better.
