Materials
- Copper
Used for
- Sealing washers on drain plugs, banjo bolts and hydraulic fittings
- Gaskets on fittings that see heat and pressure
Choosing the grade
A copper washer seals because it is softer than the two faces it sits between: when the bolt is tightened, the copper flows into the surface marks and closes them.
That only works if the copper is soft. Copper hardens as it is worked, so sealing washers should be annealed. Ask for annealed washers, and put it on the drawing if it matters.
Do not reuse copper washers on anything that holds pressure; the first tightening work-hardens them.
Questions
Why does a reused copper washer leak?
Copper work-hardens when it is tightened. A used washer is harder than a new annealed one, so it no longer flows into the surface marks and the joint weeps.
