Bakelite (phenolic) and Hylam washers
Paper and fabric phenolic (bakelite, Hylam) washers, spacers and insulation parts. Made by Habib Brothers in Mumbai, OD 5–200 mm, to your drawing.
Materials
- Hylam / Bakelite (Phenolic)
Used for
- Rigid insulating washers and spacers in electrical equipment
- Terminal boards and insulating plates
- Parts that must stay stiff and hold their shape under heat
Choosing the grade
Phenolic is rigid and holds its dimensions well, which makes it a good insulating spacer.
Hard insulators do not give under load. If washers crack on the assembly line, lower the driver torque, add material around the hole, or move to a tougher insulator such as vulcanised fibre.
Fabric-based grades (Hylam) are tougher than paper-based grades.
Questions
Why do bakelite washers crack during assembly?
Bakelite is rigid, so if the screw is driven too hard the washer splits. Lowering the driver torque, adding material around the hole, or changing to vulcanised fibre usually solves it.
